Yipsi Moreno of Cuba competes in women's hammer throw final at Pan American Games

Olympic silver medalist Yipsi Moreno of Cuba has repeated as women's hammer throw champion to highlight action Monday at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Moreno threw 75.2 meters to break her own Pan Ams record. Her toss comfortably won by more than six meters to retain the title she won in Santo Domingo four years ago. Moreno won the silver in 1999.

In women's soccer, defending champion Brazil defeated Mexico, 2-0, to reach the final. In futsal, Brazil debuted with a lackluster 4-1 win over Guatemala. Paraguay beat Cuba, 2-1. Costa Rica topped Ecuador, 6-4.

Earlier, strong winds overnight destroyed part of the softball venue and forced games organizers to postpone the start of that competition. The men's water skiing jump preliminaries were also delayed.

The United States is the runaway leader in the medals standings with 58 gold and 143 total, ahead of Cuba (30,62) and host Brazil (27,86).

The Pan Ams are seen as a big test for Rio's hopes of hosting the 2016 Olympics.
