The Pacific storm named Flossie has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service canceled the hurricane watch for Hawaii's Big Island earlier Wednesday, just hours after Flossie was downgraded to a Category One storm. The storm has weakened to 112 kilometers an hour, and forecasters say it will continue to lose strength over the next 24 hours. The Big Island is still under a tropical storm warning, with strong winds, heavy surf and rainfalls up to 20 centimeters.

Meanwhile, the fifth tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to pick up strength today in the Gulf of Mexico as it moves towards the Texas coast in the southwestern U.S. Forecasters say the storm could dump as much as 20 centimeters on several parts of Texas.

And Tropical Storm Dean is also expected to grow stronger over the next 24 hours as it churns more than 1,800 kilometers east of the Lesser Antilles.

Forecasters say it could become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2007 season later in the week.
