The U.S. military says coalition forces in Iraq have detained two people suspected of smuggling weapons into the country from Iran.

In a statement, the military says the arrests were made early Tuesday during a raid in the village of Qazaniyah near the Iranian border. Troops killed one gunman during the operation.

The U.S. military says the detainees are believed to have smuggled and distributed Iranian weapons through links to the elite al-Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.

U.S. officials say their capture will lead to more intelligence on weapons smuggling networks and more arrests.

In another statement Tuesday, the U.S. military says Iraqi soldiers dismantled an al-Qaida in Iraq cell Monday, detaining six suspected terrorists and 40 other people suspected of ties to al-Qaida.

In other developments, Iraq's parliament reconvened Tuesday after a month-long recess.

U.S. officials have been pressing the Iraqi government to draft a series of laws the United States considers benchmarks for progress.

It is unclear whether the legislation is ready to be considered by parliament.
