US Audit: Homeland Security Failing to Achieve Its Mission

06 September 2007

U.S. congressional auditors say the Homeland Security department has failed to meet half of its performance expectations since its creation in 2003.

The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, is to release the report Thursday.

The report says the Homeland Security department met less than half of the 171 performance objectives identified by President Bush and Congress.

The department has disputed the report.

During Congressional testimony on Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told lawmakers that the country is safer than it was before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Homeland Security Undersecretary for Management Paul Schneider is to testify before the U.S. Senate Thursday.

The department was formed in 2003, comprising more than 20 federal agencies.

Some information for this report was provided by AP .
