The African Union has confirmed that an armed group has attacked a refugee camp in Sudan's war torn western Darfur region, killing several people.

AU spokesman Noureddine Mezni told reporters Saturday that the attack took place within the last 48 hours at the Kalma camp near Nyala in south Darfur. It was not clear how many people were killed or who was behind the attack.

Darfur rebel groups are scheduled to meet soon for peace talks with the Sudanese government in Libya.

Published reports have indicated the clashes broke out between tribal groups that disagree on the peace process.

Disputes have led the regional tribal groups to splinter into factions during the past year. 

Rebel groups met earlier this week in the southern Sudan city of Juba in an effort to unify their position ahead of the talks.

Last week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that continued fighting in Darfur is spoiling the atmosphere for the peace talks.

Darfur rebel groups launched their fight against the central Sudanese government in 2003.  Since then, fighting between the 2 million others.
