BBG Chairman James Glassman

The White House has announced it is nominating James Glassman to lead State Department efforts to improve America's image abroad.

Glassman would be filling the post vacated by Karen Hughes, a long-time advisor to President Bush. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.

Glassman is currently chairman of the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors, the government agency that oversees Voice of America and other U.S. international broadcasters.

The White House spokeswoman says Glassman is meeting with President Bush Tuesday to discuss efforts to counter violence and extremism and further the principles of democracy and liberty.

In October, Hughes announced her resignation as Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. She leaves the post this week.

Despite her efforts, the Pew Global Attitudes Project reports that the image of the United States in Muslim countries, already low, dropped lower during the past two years while Hughes was in the post.
