US Refuses to Set New Deadline for North Korea Nuclear Plan

12 January 2008

The U.S. government says there is no new deadline for North Korea to deliver a full accounting of its nuclear programs.

A State Department official in Washington told reporters Friday that the only set deadline is the one North Korea failed to meet on December 31.

Under the terms of a six-party deal, North Korea was to have disabled its nuclear facilities and delivered a full accounting of its nuclear weapons by the end of 2007. In exchange, it would receive economic and diplomatic incentives.

The top U.S. nuclear envoy met with Russian officials in Moscow today as part of a round of consultations on North Korea's denuclearization.

Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters the next round of six-party talks could take place in the next few weeks.
