Officials in Madagascar say the death toll from Cyclone Ivan has risen to at least 83.

Authorities warn the toll could rise further as many people are still missing from the February 17 cyclone.

Ivan hit Madagascar with winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour and brought heavy rains that triggered flooding across the island.

Officials say the cyclone left about 190,000 people homeless and caused heavy damage to crops, roads and public buildings. Last week, Madagascar's government appealed for international aid.

Aid groups including the United Nations World Food Program have begun to deliver supplies to the country.

Another storm, Cyclone Fame, hit Madagascar in January, killing at least 13 people.

Before the storms, Madagascar was already dealing with floods caused by unusually heavy seasonal rains.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
