Legal experts say the laborious procedure that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has been following since the country's elections Saturday is not required by law.

These experts say the results of races for the house, senate and local councils should be announced at the constituency level, and that the only result which the commission is legally bound to tabulate is the outcome of the presidential election.

Human rights lawyer Irene Petras, vice chairwoman of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, told reporter Carole Gombakomba of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the commission should be concentrating on the presidential results.
