Witnesses in Somalia's capital say at least seven people have been wounded in a suicide car bombing outside a base for African Union peacekeepers.

The attack Tuesday, targeted a building that houses Burundian soldiers serving with the AU peacekeeping force in Somalia.

Witnesses say the car exploded after ramming a gate at the building in southern Mogadishu. At least two Burundian soldiers and five civilians were wounded.

Burundi and Uganda are the only countries that have provided troops for the AU force in Somalia. The force has mainly patrolled Mogadishu's airport and seaport since arriving last March.

Fighting continues to rage in other parts of the city and country as Islamist insurgents try to topple the Somali interim government.

The government, assisted by Ethiopian troops, drove a militant Islamist movement from power across southern Somalia in late 2006.

Clashes over the past 16 months have killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. International aid agencies warn the fighting is worsening Somalia's already dire humanitarian situation.
