An Afghan official says a suicide bombing in front of a mosque in southwestern Afghanistan has killed at least 23 people and wounded at least 34 others.

The governor of Nimroz province, Ghulam Dastagir Azad, says Thursday's attack took place in the provincial capital of Zaranj.

He says two senior police officers were among the victims and that the death toll could rise.

Elsewhere, Afghan and international forces report killing at least 13 Taliban insurgents in Ghazni province southwest of the capital, Kabul.

Afghan officials say 10 insurgents were killed Thursday as they tried to ambush a military convoy along a highway. The Afghan Defense Ministry says three other Taliban fighters were killed in a separate incident in Ghazni.

There were no reported casualties among Afghan and international forces.

However, in Kandahar province, a soldier in the NATO-led force was wounded by a roadside bomb blast in the town of Spin Boldak.

The suicide bombing in Nimroz was at least the third there this month.

One such attack killed two policemen at a police compound April 1. Another suicide bomber killed two road construction engineers from India and their Afghan driver last week.
