Pakistan's ruling coalition has failed to agree on an immediate plan to restore top judges ousted by President Pervez Musharraf last year.

Coalition leaders Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told a news conference in Islamabad Tuesday that they will honor a commitment to reinstate the judges soon. The coalition leaders spoke following two-day talks aimed at sorting out the details of a resolution to restore the judges.

Mr. Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, said the coalition agrees it must pass the resolution in the National Assembly soon.

But he said he differs with Zardari, head of the Pakistan People's Party, on how fast to move on a constitutional amendment to strip President Musharraf of powers to dissolve parliament.

The coalition signed an agreement in March to reinstate the justices by the end of April.

Mr. Musharraf dismissed the judges in November under a state of emergency, fearing legal challenges to his presidential re-election.
