Olympic Torch Arrives on Chinese Mainland

03 May 2008

The state run Xinhua news agency says 208 torchbearers will carry it along a 30 kilometer route.

The torch will then travel around mainland China, visiting Tibet from June 19th through the 21st, on its way to the opening of the Beijing Olympics on August eighth.

But weather conditions may delay China's plans to take the Olympic torch to the top of the world's tallest mountain.

Heavy snow has been falling on Mount Everest, which lies partly in Tibet. Chinese authorities are not saying how long that could delay plans to carry the torch to Everest's nearly nine-thousand meter peak.

Earlier today Saturday, huge crowds waved flags and cheered as the flame was carried peacefully through the Chinese territory of Macau.

The relays in Macau today Saturday and in neighboring Hong Kong Friday were held without any of the chaotic demonstrations that marred most of the torch's international journey.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters.
