2nd Day of Olympic Torch Relay on China's Hainan Island Begins

04 May 2008

The second day of the Olympic torch relay on the southern Chinese island of Hainan has begun.

China's official Xinhua news agency says Monday's relay started early in the city of Wuzhishan, where Sunday's relay from the seaside resort of Sanya ended.

Thousands of supporters - many waving flags - cheered Sunday as the torch was carried through the streets of Sanya. No protesters were evident during the run.

Demonstrations have taken place at several locations during the torch's five-continent journey. Most of the protests were over China's crackdown against protests in Tibet.

The torch will travel now around mainland China, visiting provinces with large Tibetan populations in June, on its way to the opening of the Beijing Olympics on August 8.
