Police in Zimbabwe have arrested the editor of the privately-owned pro-opposition newspaper, The Standard.

Zimbabwean journalists say Davison Maruziva was arrested Thursday over an opinion piece that appeared in The Standard last month. The article was written by Arthur Mutambara, an official in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Meanwhile, a Reuters news agency photographer detained by Zimbabwean police has been released on bail after three days in custody.

Howard Burditt, a Zimbabwean national, was arrested for allegedly using a satellite phone to transmit pictures while covering the aftermath of the country's recent elections.

Zimbabwean officials say it is illegal to use a satellite phone unless it has been registered.

Rights groups and the MDC say President Mugabe and his supporters are trying to intimidate perceived opponents ahead of a possible run-off election.

On Wednesday, Zimbabwean police arrested a lawyer on charges of insulting the president. Harrison Mkomo allegedly said that Zimbabwe is suffering under Mr. Mugabe's 28-year rule.
