Russian President Dmitri Medvedev says his country is ready to negotiate with the United States on plans to build a missile defense system in Europe, but will retaliate if there is no mutually acceptable solution.

In an interview with Chinese news media representatives, the Russian leader said he does not think the situation is hopeless. However, he said he does not approve of recent decisions, adding that he will look into what he called a "proper response."

Medvedev says Russia is willing to continue talks with both Europe and the United States on the issue.

The United States wants to deploy 10 land-based interceptor missile silos in Poland and guidance radar in the Czech Republic.

The Bush administration says the system is intended to defend the United States and its European allies against potential ballistic missile attacks by Iran.

Moscow calls the plan a threat to Russian security.

On Wednesday, the Czech government approved a deal allowing deployment parts of the system on Czech soil.

U.S. and Polish officials are still holding talks on the deal, which faces strong opposition from Russia.
