Refugees Attacked by Armed Men Outside Zimbabwe Capital

07 July 2008

Armed men in Zimbabwe have attacked a group of internally displaced people outside the capital, Harare.

The attack took place at a camp on Zimbabwe government property near the town of Ruwa, about 15 kilometers from Harare. About 400 opposition supporters were moved there after seeking refuge at the South African embassy.

Officials from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change say the injured are in the Gokwe hospital but there is no medicine to treat them.

Violence against opposition officials and supporters has dramatically increased in the past few days.

On Monday, the badly decomposed body of MDC activist Joshua Bakacheza was found after he went missing for nearly two weeks. Party Spokesman Nelson Chamisa says his death brings the total number of opposition supporters killed to 109 since the country's presidential election March 29.

Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the MDC, won the March 29 presidential election, but failed to win enough votes to avoid a second round. Tsvangirai pulled out of the runoff last month, citing state-sponsored violence against his supporters.
