Peruvian authorities say a magnitude 6.2 earthquake has rocked southern Peru, killing at least one person and injuring several others.

Authorities say a 93-year-old man was killed after a wall of his house collapsed on him during the quake, which shook the region early Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was centered about 55 kilometers northwest of Arequipa.

Earlier this year, a magnitude 5.4 quake struck coastal waters near the Peruvian capital, Lima, but caused no major damage or injuries. The tremor sent frightened residents running into the streets and phone lines were jammed for a while.

Back in August, a magnitude eight earthquake struck Peru's southern coast, killing at least 540 people and injuring 1,500 others.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
