Afghan officials say 20 Taliban militants have been killed in western Afghanistan.

Provincial police chief Khalilullah Rahmani said Saturday Afghan forces backed by the U.S.-led coalition retaliated after being attacked by a group of militants in the Bala Boluk district of Farah province Friday.

A U.S.-coalition spokesman confirmed its forces carried out air strikes against the militants after being attacked by small arms and indirect fire.  U.S. military officials could not confirm the number of militants killed, but said there were no U.S. casualties.

Also Saturday, NATO said one of its soldiers was killed during an attack by insurgents in southern Afghanistan.  NATO did not release the soldier's nationality or give details of the incident.

In northeastern Afghanistan, NATO officials Saturday said an Afghan child was killed and two others injured Friday when militants attacked NATO soldiers in Kunar province.

Also Friday, the U.S.-led coalition said its forces killed several militants during an operation in eastern Paktika province.  U.S. officials said a woman was evacuated for medical treatment after being wounded in the clash.
