Opposition sources in Burma say two key opposition lawmakers have been arrested.

Opposition supporters say Nyi Pu and Tin Min Htut were arrested at their homes in Rangoon early Tuesday. The two members of parliament are among five who sent a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last month, expressing concern about the UN stance on Burma. The letter also expressed their opposition to elections scheduled for 2010.

The arrests come four days after Burmese opposition supporters marked the 20th anniversary of a popular uprising against the military government.

Police arrested 48 demonstrators Friday in the western state of Rahkine, but released all but five of them the next day. There is no word on the fate of the five still in detention.

The 1988 uprising brought down longtime military ruler Ne Win.  But the military eventually regained control of the government after a bloody crackdown that killed an estimated 3,000 people.
