Rescuers Find Hikers Missing in Grand Canyon Flood

19 August 2008

Police say rescue workers have located 11hikers feared missing after flash flooding struck a remote Grand Canyon town in Arizona.

A spokesman for the local Coconino Country sheriff's department, Gerry Blair, confirmed Tuesday that the individuals are safe.

The official said police have now accounted for all visitors who signed in to the area as required. But it is possible that some people who did not check in might still be missing.

Rescuers continued to search the hiking trails and surrounding areas by foot and air Tuesday.

Crews began evacuating people Sunday, after heavy rains caused an earthen dam to burst near the canyon, releasing water into the gorge. Many of the evacuees were residents of Supai, a Native American town populated by the Havasupai tribe.

The Grand Canyon is a U.S. national park. The deep river gorge's striking scenery makes it a popular destination for tourists.
