Iraqi Troops Detain Prominent Sunni Leader's Son

20 August 2008

The U.S. military says Iraqi troops have detained the son of a prominent Sunni politician during a raid in Baghdad.

The military says U.S. troops were not involved in the arrest of Muthanna al-Dulaimi. He is the son of Adnan al-Dulaimi, who heads Iraq's largest Sunni Arab political bloc, The National Accordance Front. The elder al-Dulaimi says his son is not involved in politics.

Another son of al-Dulaimi was arrested last year and remains in custody.

Also Wednesday, coalition forces said they detained 13 suspected terrorists in central Iraq.

Earlier, Iraqi officials said Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered an investigation into a deadly Iraqi military raid on local authorities in Diyala province.

The head of Diyala's provincial council, Ibrahem Bajalan, tells VOA Kurdish service Mr. Maliki has formed a committee to investigate the operation.

Iraqi troops raided the office of Diyala's governor, Raad Rashid al-Tamimi, in the provincial capital, Baquba, before dawn Tuesday. The soldiers killed the governor's secretary and arrested a Diyala council member, Hussein al-Zubaidi.

After Iraqi troops left the governor's office, they exchanged fire with local security forces in Baquba. Several people were wounded. It is not clear how Iraqi forces came to fight each other.

Diyala's provincial council suspended its activities to protest the operation.

The U.S. military says it was not involved in the operation. Iraqi and U.S. forces recently began an offensive in Diyala to crack down on militants based in the province, which lies northeast of Baghdad.
