Contradicting Zimbabwean government statements that a recent deadly outbreak of cholera in Chitungwiza and incidents of water-borne disease in Harare have been brought under control, the Combined Harare Residents Association said residents of the capital and the surrounding region still face a high risk of communicable disease.

The association said authorities are doing little to tackle the ultimate source of the threat by providing a reliable supply of clean water and repairing sewage systems which have badly deteriorated, releasing infectious pollutants.

Combined Harare Residents Association Information Officer Justice Mavedzenge told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that his association has received reports of 23 cases of diarrheal disease, raising fears cholera may be striking again.
