American pop singer Madonna and British filmmaker Guy Ritchie are divorcing after more than seven years of marriage.

Madonna's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg Wednesday confirmed British media reports that the divorce was imminent.

The announcement follows months of rumors about marital problems between the high-profile couple.

Madonna is currently in the middle of a global concert tour dubbed "Sticky and Sweet," while Ritchie is directing a movie based on the popular detective series "Sherlock Holmes."

The couple have two children together, a seven-year-old son, Rocco, and a three-year-old, David, whom they adopted earlier this year from a Malawian orphanage.  Madonna also has a daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship.

She was married to American actor Sean Penn in the 1980s.
