The United Nations' chief war crimes prosecutor Serge Brammertz has begun a two-day visit to Serbia to evaluate the country's efforts toward apprehending Europe's most wanted fugitive, Ratko Mladic.

Mladic has been charged by a war crimes tribunal in the Hague of genocide with helping orchestrate the massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenicia in 1995.

It was the worst carnage in Europe since World War II.

The visit comes just a month before Brammertz reports to the U.N. Security Council on Serbia's cooperation with the war crimes tribunal.

A favorable report is seen as key to Serbia's goal of closer ties to the European Union.

However Serbian officials acknowledge so long as Mladic is still at large there is little chance Brammertz will give the nod to warmer relations.
