Authorities in Warsaw have created a new memorial to honor the memory of the city's many Jewish residents killed during the Nazi occupation.

City officials Wednesday inaugurated a tourist trail delineating the borders of the infamous Warsaw Ghetto. The trail is marked by plaques with pictures commemorating the lives of those imprisoned within the squalid, impoverished enclave.

The Nazis established the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, one year after invading and occupying Poland. Hundreds of thousands of Jews - one third of the city's population - were held in the ghetto before being shipped off to concentration or death camps.

Survivors, speaking at ceremonies Wednesday, marveled at how the area has changed since World War II, when Nazi forces razed it after crushing the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising. Poles rebuilt the entire city after the war.
