UEFA Probes Marseille Fan Behavior at Champions League

28 November 2008

The European Football Union (UEFA) has opened a case against the French club Marseille after objects were thrown at Liverpool's Steven Gerrard during a Champions' League match Wednesday.

UEFA said in a statement Friday that it opened the inquiry after Gerrard appeared to be hit by a cigarette lighter thrown from the crowd during Wednesday's game at Anfield.  The English club won the contest, 1-0.

The investigation follows a similar incident when the two teams met in France.  UEFA said Friday it had fined Marseille more than $19,000 because an object was thrown from the stands during the September 16 match, which Liverpool won 2-1.

Meanwhile, UEFA also opened a case against the Italian club AS Roma after fans set off fireworks and blocked the exits during the Italians' Group A match at Chelsea.

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary body will examine both cases in a hearing December 11.
