Zimbabwe Union Remains at Odds With MDC On Constitutional Process

08 July 2009

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions said Wednesday that it remains at odds with both formations of the former opposition Movement for Democratic Change on the constitutional revision process recently launched with a series of public hearings.

The union said it was agreed by the MDC and civic groups as early as 1999 that the process of redrafting the country's basic document should be people-driven, but it charged that the MDC formations have not adhered to that agreement. A special parliamentary committee has been given responsibility for drafting the new constitution with public input.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President Lovemore Matombo told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that letting the government lead the process is contrary to longstanding resolutions adopted by the country's main union.
