Iranian voters went to the polls Friday, June 12, to choose a president. Iran’s Interior Ministry proclaimed incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad the victor. According to election commission figures, Mr. Ahmedinejad won about 62 percent of the vote to nearly 34 percent for his closest competitor, Mir Hossein Mousavi. Mr. Mousavi complained of voting irregularities and his supporters took to the streets in protest.
Since then there have been daily demonstrations by many thousands of residents in Tehran and elsewhere – at first protesting the election results, but now for basic human rights in Iran. How this situation will end is uncertain but, one way or another, it will change the future of Iran.
