An Egyptian court has sentenced a powerful Egyptian businessman to 15 years in prison, after a retrial, for the murder of a Lebanese pop star.
The courts had sentenced 50-year-old businessman Hisham Talaat Moustafa and former policeman Mohsen el-Sukkary to death for the 2008 murder of Lebanese singer Suzanne Tamim.
An Egyptian court overturned the conviction in March, without an explanation, and ordered a retrial.
Moustafa was convicted last year of paying the policeman $2 million to kill the pop star, who was the businessman's former lover. Officials said evidence proved that Sukkary followed Tamim to her apartment in Dubai and then slit her throat.
Sukkary was sentenced Thursday to life in prison, which is 25 years in the Egyptian justice system, after a retrial.
The case has been followed closely in Egypt, where many people believe the rich and powerful are rarely held accountable for breaking the law.
Moustafa is a member of the Shura Council, Egypt's upper house of parliament. He was also an associate of Gamal Mubarak, the son and likely heir of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Suzanne Tamim rose to fame in the mid-1990s after winning a television talent show seen across the Arab world.
