The Change of Command in Afghanistan
In this "From the Newsroom" segment, VOA senior correspondent Gary Thomas analyzes the change of commanders in Afghanistan announced by President Barack Obama June 23. Thomas discusses the reasons for and the implications of the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal and the appointment of General David Petraeus as his replacement in Afghanistan.
Since 1986, Gary Thomas has covered Congress, the White House, the Defense Department, and U.S. regulatory agencies for VOA. In 1990, he began a four-year tour as VOA's South Asia correspondent based in Islamabad. From there, he moved to Bangkok where, until 2001, he worked as VOA's Southeast Asia correspondent.
