Shashi Prakash - Broadcaster

Shashi PrakashWhen Shashi Prakash joined VOA Hindi in 1999, he brought nearly four decades of radio broadcast experience. In addition to his regular reporting, writing, voicing, and program production duties, Shashi keeps track of the reporting assignments of the much expanded stringers network for VOA Hindi.  He also handles listeners’ calls for VOA Hindi’s call-in programs, “Hello America” and  “Hello India”, earning a Superior Accomplishment Award for his dexterity in this assignment.  Shashi is also one of the editors for VOA Hindi’s web page.

Music became a part of Shashi’s life from his childhood, as his mother was a classical vocal music artist. And from music he moved to drama, both on radio and on the stage.  After growing as a child artist for All India Radio - Allahabad,  he joined AIR as a program announcer in 1962, and moved to Vividh Bharati in Mumbai.  For the Chitrashala Program of Vividh Bharti, he interviewed such art luminaries of India as Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachhan, Talat Mehmood, and Bismillah Khan.

Shashi continued to be active in the stage play arena, acting and directing stage plays such as “Chhata Beta” by Upendra Nath Ashq, “Do Kalakar” by Bhagwati Sharan Verma, and “Adhoori Aawaaz”  by Kamleshwar.  He also wrote, produced and acted in radio skits for the popular “Hawa Mahal” program of Vividh Bharati, the popular branch of AIR broadcasting network.  Several of his short stories and poems were also published in Hindi magazines, and he won several prizes in radio competitions for his plays and documentary features. While in Mumbai, Shashi also narrated and did voice-over for documentary films.

Shashi received a Senior Diploma in classical vocal music, and did post graduate studies in Ancient History, Archaeology and Culture at Allahabad University.  He also earned a degree in Journalism from the Rajasthan University.
