Ethiopia took an early lead in the medal counts on the opening day of the African Athletics Championships (30 April 30- 4 May 2008) in Addis Ababa with a clean medal sweep in the 10,000 meters.  

Gebreegziabher Gebremariam led the Ethiopian trio to victory and finished   28:17.11.  He was followed by Ibrahim Jeylan at 28:30.66 and Eshetu Wondimu 28:56.36, who took silver and bronze respectively.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi opened Africa’s biggest athletics tournament by telling the spectators he always feels honored to celebrate the successes of Ethiopian runners.
