Meselech Melkamu of Ethiopia pulled a surprise victory in the women’s 5,000m beating the world champion and record holder Mesret Defar to a second place in the competition’s closest finish. Meselech crossed the line in 15:49.81 acing the Olympic champion Meresret, who finished in 15:50.19. Kenya’s Grace Momanyi took the bronze medal breaking an all-Ethiopian sweep – a follow up from yesterday’s clean-sweep in the men’s 10,000 meters. Belaynesh Fedadu of Ethiopia finished fourth.

In other distances, Nigerians dominated the short distances. Nigeria’s sprinting sensation Olusoji Fasuba won the 100m men’s event as his compatriot Damola Osayomi finished top of the women’s category for the distance.
