Old Oromo Text Published in Latin alphabet

29/06/2009

The 115-year-old Oromo text book, The Primary Afan Oromo Lesson, has been translated from the original Geez script to the Latin alphabet adopted by the Oromo in 1991. The book, written in 1894 by former slave and evangelical Christian Onesmos Nesib, has been re-adopted and was displayed at Onesmos Memorial Day, June 22, 2009 at Lutheran churches in many countries.

The book was originally published by the Swedish Mission Printing Press in Mankullo, Eritrea, and recently by Aba Chala Latta.

The Reverend Kreg Muller of Chicago office of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America said that he was a member of the ELCA commitee which in 1978 had decided June 22 to be the memorial day of Onesmos Nasib and marked on the ELCA calendar. Jalene Gemeda talk to Rev. Muller and the adopter of Onesmos's book Mr. Aba Chala Latta.
