남아프리카 공화국은 보호론자들과 동물 권익옹호 운동가들의 반발에도 불구하고, 13년 만에 코끼리 도살 금지령을 해제했습니다.

남아공 정부는 앞서 올해, 1만 8천 마리로 지난 1995년 이후 2배 이상 증가한 코끼리 수가 더 이상 증가하는 것을 통제하는 방법의 하나로  이같은 조치를 승인했으며 1일부터 발효됐습니다.

한편, 한 동물보호단체는 콩고민주공화국의 비룽가 국립공원에서 지난 2주일 동안 14마리의 코끼리가 불법적으로 도살됐다고 말했습니다.

'와일드라이프 다이렉트'라는 이 단체는 1일 성명을 통해, 정부군과 반군, 마을 주민들이 코끼리를 도살했다고 비난했습니다.

South Africa has lifted a 13-year ban on killing elephants, despite an outcry from conservationists and animal rights activists.

The government earlier this year authorized the move, which took effect today (Thursday), as a way of controlling the rising elephant population, which has more than doubled since 1995, to 18-thousand.

In related news, a conservation group says 14 elephants have been illegally killed during the last two weeks in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Virunga National Park.

Wildlife Direct says in a statement released today (Thursday) that rebels, soldiers and local villagers killed the elephants.

The group blames the surge in poaching on the liberalization of the ivory trade being pushed by South Africa, and the increased presence of Chinese operators in the area who feed a demand for ivory in their home country.

The park was estimated to have an elephant population of 350 as of 2006.
