한국의 이명박 대통령은 국민건강이 위협받을 경우 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 즉각 중단하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

이명박 대통령은 국민의 건강을 보호하기 위해 가능한 모든 조치를 다 취하겠다며 이같이 밝혔습니다.

한국 정부는 광우병 파동으로 지난5년간 수입을 금지했던 미국산 쇠고기를 다시 전면 수입하기로 미국측과  지난달 합의했습니다.

그러나 한국 내에서는 광우병에 대한 우려 때문에 미국과 재협상 하라는 여론이 높아지고 있습니다.  미국산 쇠고기 수입 문제를 이유로 이명박 대통령의 탄핵을 요구하는 인터넷 서명운동은 서명자가 1백만 명을 넘었습니다.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak says his government will immediately suspend imports of beef from the United States if the public's health is in danger.

Seoul agreed to fully re-open its markets to American-produced beef last month, ending a five-year ban after a single case of the fatal brain disease known as "mad cow disease" was discovered in the U.S.

But there has been mounting public pressure to renegotiate the deal because of fears over mad cow disease. An Internet petition calling for Mr. Lee's impeachment has collected more than one million signatures.

But the president assures his government will take "all possible measures" to protect South Korean citizens.

South Korea's parliament is expected to hold hearings on the deal today (Wednesday).
