버마 군사 정부가 태풍 이재민들을 위한 유엔 구호물자를 압류하자 유엔이 버마에 대한 구호물자 항공 수송을 중단했습니다.

유엔 세계식량계획 관리들은 적어도 두 건의 구호 식량 선적분이 버마 정부에 의해 압류당했다며, 이 문제가 해결될 때까지 추가 구호물자 선적을 중단할 수밖에 없다고 밝혔습니다.

버마 군사 정부는 외국의 구호물자는 접수할 것이지만,  구호물자  배분은 버마인들에게 맡길 것이라며 현시점에서  외국 구호 요원들의 버마 입국을 원하지  않는다고 밝혔습니다.

버마 정부는 지난 주 태풍 나르기스 호로 인한 사망자 수가 약 2만3천명에 이르고 실종자 수도 4만2천 명에 달한다고 밝히고 있습니다.

The United Nations says it has suspended aid flights to Burma after the Burmese government seized relief supplies that were flown into the military-ruled country to help victims of last week's cyclone.

Officials with the UN's World Food Program say (today/ Friday) at least two food aid shipments to Burma have been impounded, adding that they have no choice but to suspend further aid shipments until the matter is resolved.

The Burmese government's decision is likely to further ignite international outrage over Burma's response to Cyclone Nargis and refusal to allow foreign aid workers into the country to help distribute aid to the hundreds of thousands who need it.

So far, Burma's military leaders have only agreed to accept foreign aid, but insist that its own nationals be used to distribute relief supplies.

Nargis killed nearly 23-thousand, and left 42-thousand missing. But, U.S. and other officials warn the death toll from the cyclone could reach 100-thousand people.
