안보 당국자들은 간 밤에 레바논 북부의 항구도시 트리폴리에서 친 정부 수니파와 헤즈볼라 지지자들 사이에 대대적인 전투가 벌어졌다고 말했습니다. 당국자들은 나중에 레바논 군이 진입을 시작한 후 트리폴리 상황이 진정됐다고 말했습니다.

New clashes have broken out in Lebanon between Shi'ite gunmen and pro-government fighters in the mountains just east of Beirut, while Arab leaders call for a ceasefire.

Security officials say fighting erupted today (Sunday) between supporters of the Shi'ite group Hezbollah and Druze fighters loyal to the Western-backed government.

Meanwhile, top diplomats from the 22-member Arab League issued a statement urging an immediate halt to fighting in Lebanon. Arab foreign ministers are holding an emergency meeting in Cairo to discuss the crisis.

Security officials say there was heavy fighting overnight in the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli between pro-government Sunnis and (Alawite) Hezbollah supporters. Officials say the situation in Tripoli calmed later as Lebanese troops began to move in.

At least one person was killed in Tripoli, bringing Lebanon's death toll to 38 after five days of fighting.

Beirut, however, remained calm after Hezbollah fighters pulled back from areas they had seized earlier.
