버마를 강타한 태풍 나르기스호로 인한 사망자 수는 계속  늘고 있는 가운데, 유엔은 수만명의 생존자들이 구호 물품을 전달받지 못해 생명이 위태롭다고 말했습니다.

버마 정부는 13일 태풍으로 인한 사망자 수는 3만 4천명을 넘었다고 발표했으며, 유엔은 사망자 수가 10만명에 달할 수 있다고 추산하고 있습니다.

유럽연합 집행위원회는 버마 정부가 루이 미셸 유럽연합 개발 및 인도주의 지원 담당 집행위원의 입국을 허락했다고 13일 밝혔습니다. 미셸위원은 버마에서 국제 구호 요원들과 구호 물자의 용이한 접근방안을 모색할 계획입니다.

유엔 인도주의업무조정국 OCHA의 엘리자베스 바이어스 대변인은 이날 “최소한 1백 5십만명이 심각한 태풍 피해를 입었으나 이들 중 3분의 1 정도만이 구호 물자를 전달받고 있다”고 말했습니다.

세계보건기구 WHO는 버마의 열악한 위생 상태로 인해 전염병이 창궐할 수 있다고 경고했습니다.

버마 군정은 지금까지 긴급 물자를 나눠 주기 위해 구호 요원들의 입국을 허락하라는 국제 사회의 압력을  외면했습니다. 유엔 당국자들은 공항에 구호 물자가 쌓이고 있다고 말했습니다.

As the death toll in Burma from Cyclone Nargis climbs, the United Nations says tens of thousands of survivors from last week's storm could die because they are not getting emergency aid.

Burma announced today (Tuesday) that the death toll has passed 34-thousand. The United Nations estimates the death toll could be as high as 100-thousand.

The European Commission announced today that Burma has agreed to let the European Union's top aid official, Louis Michel, enter the country to seek better access for international aid workers and relief supplies.

A spokeswoman for the U.N. Organization for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (Elizabeth Byrs) said today that at least one and-a-half million people are severely affected by the disaster, but only about one-third of those are getting aid.

The World Health Organization has warned that, because of poor sanitary conditions, disease could break out.

Burma's military rulers have so far rejected pressure to allow international workers into the country to help distribute aid. U.N. officials say supplies are piling up at the airport, waiting to be delivered to cyclone victims.
