미국 민주당 대선예비후보인 힐러리 클린턴 상원의원은 13일 열린 웨스트 버지니아 주 예비선거에서 압도적인 승리를 거둔 후, 경선을 계속할 것이라고 다짐했습니다.

클린턴 의원은 웨스트 버지니아 압승에도 불구하고 당 대선 후보 지명을 위해 필요한 전체 대의원 확보 면에서 경쟁자인 버락 오바마 상원의원과의 격차를 좁히는데 별다는 도움을 받지 못했습니다.

그러나, 클린턴 의원은 아직 마음을 정하지 않은 수퍼대의원들은 이번 승리로 자신이 더 나은 후보라는 점을 납득하게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.

하지만, 오바마 의원은 14일에도 3명의 수퍼대의원의 지지를 확보하면서 클린턴 의원과의 격차를 더욱 넓혔습니다.

한편, 오는 11월의 대선 본선에서 민주당에서 클린턴 의원과 오바마 의원 중 누가 후보가 되더라도 공화당 후보로 사실상 확정된 존 맥케인 의원에게 승리할 것이라는 새로운 여론조사 결과가 나왔습니다.

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is promising to press on with her campaign, following a landslide victory in Tuesday's primary in (the eastern state of) West Virginia.

The win does little to help Clinton catch up to her rival, fellow Senator Barack Obama, in the total number of delegates needed to secure the nomination.

But, Clinton hopes it will convince unpledged superdelegates that she is the better candidate.

Obama continues to widen his superdelegate lead on Clinton, picking up the support of three more (Congressman Peter Visclosky, Democrats Abroad chair Christine Schon Marques and College Democrats vice president Awais Khaleel) today (Wednesday).

Superdelegates are party officials and elected office holders who are free to vote for either candidate at the party's nominating convention in August.

Looking ahead to the November general election, a new poll (out of Quinnipiac University) shows voters favor either Democratic candidate over presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.
