Phomma Phimmasone

Laos’ veteran crooner Phomma Phimmasone is considered a great songwriter and singer and has been since the old days of the Kingdom of Laos. He has recently released three new albums entitled “Neung Diew Nai Duang Jai,” “Song Jai Hak” and “Leua Phieng Phae Mon.” He has composed many songs which he divides into three themes - love and heartache, beloved motherland, and religion. He started his songwriting career way back when he was in Laos. And thirty years after leaving his beloved motherland, he still continues to write songs for himself and others to sing. Mr. Phimmasone has also sung other composers’ songs.

Mr. Phimmasone told VOA in a recent interview, “I started singing at an early age, I love to sing and to write songs. Back in Laos in the old days, I used to sing at temples during festivals and

at many social functions and events. Heartbreak was the main reason for me to further my passion in singing and songwriting. As you have seen, many of my songs are about love and heartache.”

Currently Mr. Phimmasone resides in Canada with his family. He has held many tours and concerts throughout Canada and many states in the United States and in France in 2006. He told VOA that he was surprised to see so many fans show up at his concerts and still enjoy his songs. The majority is older folks who grew up with his music, some are younger and some are just curious to see how he looks like.

In many minds, Mr. Phimmasone is a true legend in the Lao music industry. Although now in his late 60’s, Mr. Phimmasone says he will still continue to compose songs and sing for all Laotians around the globe who still enjoy and appreciate his music.
