The al-Qaida in Iraq militant group says it has decided to kill two Moroccan embassy employees who were kidnapped last month.
The group announced the decision today (Thursday) in a statement that appeared on an Islamist website. It had earlier said the men would be put on trial in an Islamic court. Al-Qaida in Iraq, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has claimed responsibility for executing numerous hostages, including diplomats from Egypt and Algeria.
Japan and North Korea have begun their first bilateral talks in a year. Before the meeting today (Thursday) in Beijing, Japan said it will use the two-day talks to maintain pressure on North Korea in a dispute over the abductions of Japanese citizens. China has confirmed that the next round of six-country talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons program will begin November ninth in Beijing. Next Wednesday's start for the six-party talks comes just ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum November 18th and 19th in Busan, South Korea.
