An increasing number of Laotians have become infected with HIV/AIDS virus. Random test results show an increase of almost 300 people in the past three months alone.

The rate of iinfection in the capital city is 3.1% according to a Vientiane administrative official.

Lao officials say random tests of over 30,000 people since 1990 indicate that 1,636 people are infected.  39% of that are women aged between 20 to 29 years old.
