Laos says it will extend its elementary and secondary education from 11 to 12 years by adding another year to its elementary school system, and will also take one year off its undergraduate system, to conform with the educational systems of other ASEAN member-nations.

Laos' Minister of Education says the change will make it easier for Lao students to obtain higher educations in other ASEAN countries, and will reduce the number of Lao youth entering the work force at an early age.
