The Lao President, his wife and entourage arrived in Bangkok in the afternoon of May 12 for a working state visit at the invitation of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Lao delegation was welcomed at the airport by the Thai Crown Prince and his Crown Princess sister Phra Thep. Later that night, President Choumaly Saysone and his wife were hosted at a state dinner by the King and Queen.
During the three-day visit in Bangkok, the Lao President met with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as well as other top government officials, including the chief justice of the Thai Supreme Court, and received an honorary doctorate degree in Political Science from Thammasat University. Mr. Choumaly and his delegation also visited a number of cultural, historical and socio-economic development sites in Bangkok before returning home in the afternoon of May 14.

documents on bilateral cooperation during this visit, including agreements for Thailand to purchase additional electricity from Laos' Nam Theun 2, Nam Ngum 1 and Seset hydropower projects. A memorandum was also signed on Thailand's intention to buy electricity from the Hongsa lignite project in Laos' Sayabouly Province in the amount of 1,473 megawatts by 2015.Thailand's Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya also affirmed his country's commitment to help Laos develop its energy sector for mutual benefits, as well as its financial sector in which Thailand will assist its neighbor to establish securities markets.
