Welcome once again to "Culture
Tips" with Gary Engleton.
Today Gary will talk about
another aspect of negotiating.
Gary: Yes, today I'm going to talk about
being careful with numbers.
Eliz: What does that mean?
Gary: Well, in negotiations, people use a lot
of numbers, especially for prices.
Eliz: Uh-huh.
Gary: Sometimes it's important to ask them
where the numbers come from.
Eliz: Can you give us an example?
Gary: Sure.
Let's say that you are buying a used car.
The seller may tell you that
he wants five thousand dollars.
You should ask where the
number five thousand came from.
Eliz: To see if it's a fair price?
Gary: Yes. Whenever
it's possible, ask the seller to use a standard measure or reference.
Eliz: For example?
Gary: Well, with cars, there are standard
lists of prices that tell you how much used cars are worth.
If you check the price lists,
you may find that the car you want to buy is not worth five thousand dollars.
It may only be worth four
thousand dollars.
Eliz: So in negotiations, don't just accept
numbers. Examine them closely.
Gary: Exactly.
