Eliz:          Now it's time for Gary's Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary:         Hello, Elizabeth!   Today's Business Dialog contains examples of some language functions that are used in negotiations.

The dialog begins with John confirming what Jane needs, using the expression "So..."

Jane also confirms her needs, using the useful expression "As I said."

John:         So you need five experienced programmers by the tenth of next month?

Jane:         Yes, as I said, we are going to use a new computer system in our warehouse.

Gary:         John then reassures her that he can meet her needs.

Notice his use of the key words "promise" and "guarantee."

John:         Well, that won't be a problem.

I can promise three programmers by the first of the month.

And I can guarantee the other two by your deadline.

Gary:         Jane also asks information questions-- "How much?" and "Why?" -- to come to a better understanding of John's position.

Jane:         And how much will this cost us?

John:         It'll be two thousand dollars per week for each programmer.

Jane:         That's pretty expensive.  Why so much?

John:         Well, experienced computer programmers are expensive.

In addition, our company has to make some money on this deal.

                  We're providing a service.

Gary:         Business discussions and negotiations will always require a variety of language functions.

                  Thanks for joining us today.

Eliz:          Thanks, Gary!
