Confirming understanding of a proposal

Culture Tips

When you negotiate, you have to read very carefully and listen carefully to what people have to say.

One good way to confirm understanding is to paraphrase, or restate, what you read or hear.

Eliz:   Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton.

Today, Gary will talk about another aspect of negotiating.

Gary:   Yes, today I’m going to talk about confirming understanding of a

 proposal.

For example, if someone wants to sell a book for thirteen dollars, you want to  make sure that they aren’t saying thirty dollars.

But that’s a very simple example.

In negotiations between corporations, there may be many pages of details.

When you negotiate, you have to read very carefully and listen carefully to what people have to say.

Eliz:    What could go wrong if you don’t?

Gary:   Well, you might reject a proposal because you misunderstand it.

Or even worse, you might accept it by mistake.

One good way to confirm understanding is to paraphrase, or restate, what you read or hear.

Eliz:    Say it again in your own words.

Gary:  Right.

You shouldn’t respond to a proposal unless you are sure that you have understood it.

Eliz:    Thanks, Gary!

MUSIc:  Language Focus:

True/False

Larry:    True or False.

Saly:

True

Eliz: In negotiations, careful reading and listening are very important.

(ding)

(pause for answer)

Eliz:  True.

Poor reading or listening can cause big problems.

(pause)

Eliz:   Paraphrasing means to say something again in your own words.

(ding

(pause for answer)

 Eliz:   True.

Paraphrasing is a good way to check your understanding.
