On our May 15, 2013 program:
“African Unity?”
African Union has its roots in the Organization of African Unity (OAU). In 1963, thirty-two independent African countries met in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to find ways to unite the continent, Ghana’s then president, Kwame Nkrumah, gave one of the greatest speeches of his life, a speech which has since become the definitive blueprint for a strong, but so far sadly elusive, African unity. As the organization prepares to commemorate 50 years of existence, many analysts question why political and economic unity among many of the 54 member African states have made little; to no progress in the post-colonial era.
Join us for this live one-hour television and radio call-in simulcast, when host Shaka Ssali and his guests discuss and analyze the brain child of Kwame Nkrumah’s dream of African unity as to whether it’s a myth, or a reality
Washington Studio Guests:
Faustin Twagiramungu
former Rwandan Prime Minister and RDI Rwanda Rwiza Chairperson
Gnaka Lagoke
Ivorian Political Analyst and Founder, Revival of Pan-Africanism Forum
Question of the Week:
As the African Union prepares to commemorate 50 years of existence, is African unity a myth, or reality?
